Over 100 million new credit cards, passports and other forms of identity, contain tiny two-way radios called RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) chips. On the one hand the chip allows a fast and convenient payment/identification. On the other hand it carries the risk of being a victim of electronic pick-pockets, payment fraud and identity theft! Electronic pick-pockets – very small card readers, available on e-bay for as little as $10 – can read the personal information within seconds. How? The RFID chips are activated and powered by the signal from the remote antenna on the reader and so cannot be turned off. Once activated the RFID chip wirelessly transmits the information it contains.
